A NON-PROFIT LAW FIRM ON CAMPUS SERVING UNC STUDENTS
CSLS cannot advise or represent against another UNC student, the University, or the state of North Carolina.
LANDLORD - TENANT
Lease reviews, security deposit concerns, evictions, roommate agreements, subleasing questions, and even litigation. We can assist you with almost any landlord-tenant need.
Our Director assists the 830+ student groups on campus with their various legal needs. For all questions regarding applying for an EIN, drafting Bylaws, how to Incorporate or become an official IRS 501(c)(3) non-profit, an officer of the group must sign up for one of our weekly Student Group clinics. Contact our office to sign up for a clinic. All new groups or officers must attend one of our weekly information clinics prior to scheduling an individual appointment for your student group. We also present to student groups upon request about implementing good Risk Management practices to protect your organization from liability.
TRAFFIC, CRIMINAL & EXPUNGEMENTS
Our office is advice only on traffic/criminal, but we walk you through everything you need to know to prepare you for court so you can handle your case with ease. We do however represent on most NC expunctions to help you clear your criminal record.
NAME & GENDER MARKER CHANGES
Our office is happy to assist students that desire to change their name in NC or their gender marker on their NC birth certificate.
REFERRALS FOR BUSINESS & INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
We do not advise for-profit businesses or advise on any matters related to Intellectual Property such as Copyright, Trademark and Patent matters. We can provide a list of referrals for business related matters such as starting a for-profit business, non-disclosure agreements, partnership agreements, intellectual property, and tax matters.
FAMILY LAW & DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
We represent in most domestic violence and uncontested divorce cases, as long as the other party is not a UNC student, and the matter can be filed in Orange, Durham, Wake or Chatham counties. We also provide limited advice and referrals on other family law matters.
From debt collection to identity theft, defective products and towing cases, let us help you with your consumer troubles.
All four of our staff members are notaries. We provide notary
services to current students, faculty, and staff. We do not notarize I-9 forms, and we cannot verify the authenticity of a document.
Our office contracts with an immigration attorney to provide brief initial consultations for students with immigration matters.
We provide advice on general employment matters such as application questions, contract review, filing for unemployment, and wage and hour disputes. We provide referrals for students that have more specific employment issues such as possible discrimination, ADA claims, and wrongful termination.
NAME, IMAGE & LIKENESS
Our office collaborates with UNC Athletics, the UNC Law School, and the NC Bar Association Sports and Entertainment Law Division to provide limited advice and referrals for UNC students with questions about Name, Image and Likeness contracts.
We provide advice and assistance with drafting wills and power of attorney documents to help you prepare for your future.
We meet with students on almost any legal matter. If it's not a matter that we can advise you on, we can provide referrals to resources both on and off campus. Make our office your first stop for your legal needs.
Carolina Student Legal Services, Inc. is 501(c)(3) located on UNC's campus. Our office is separate from the university, which means that all visits are also strictly confidential. Our office is staffed by three licensed attorneys and one legal assistant. We are available to provide students with assistance in understanding the factors that should be considered when one seeks legal advice, to determine if a lawyer's services are or are not necessary, and to provide appropriate representation or referral.
CSLS is funded by an activity fee that all full-time students pay each academic year. Thus, essentially CSLS is a pre-paid service for full time students. The only instances that our clients will have out-of-pocket expenses occurs when there are court costs associated with taking court action.
ALL VISITS ARE STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL
We do occasionally offer walk-in services, but appointments are preferred. Our office is open every day that classes or exams are held. We are closed on Reading Days, University Holidays, and breaks between academic sessions.

All days classes or exams are held
The people here are super helpful and informative. The attorney that I worked with was very thorough and got all of my case documents in order. The whole process went very smoothly. Best of all, it was free.
I cannot overstate how helpful Carolina Student Legal Services was in resolving a landlord-tenant issue. Carolina Student Legal Services provided easy appointment scheduling and was very knowledgeable about state and local laws.
Definitely recommend checking out Carolina Student Legal Services if you need any legal advice or help with anything. The attorneys were extremely helpful with regards to my case and their kindness and service was exceptional.
